D.C. Black Unemployment Hits 10.1%, Highest in Nation

Washington, D.C. now has the highest overall unemployment rate of any state or territory in the country. Within that, Black unemployment in the District has climbed to 10.1% — more than double the rate for white workers there.

Why it matters: National unemployment numbers can hide big differences between communities. When job loss concentrates this heavily in one group, it raises the risk of missed rent and bill payments, mounting debt, and damaged credit for the households hit hardest.

By the numbers

  • D.C.’s overall unemployment rate rose to 6.4% in the first quarter of 2026, up from a 2025 average of 5.9% — already the highest in the country.

  • Black unemployment in D.C. reached 10.1% in Q1 2026, second only to Michigan (10.5%) among all states.

  • Black workers in D.C. were 2.6 times more likely to be unemployed than white workers there, compared with a 2.1-to-1 ratio nationally.

  • Federal jobs across the D.C.-Maryland-Virginia region fell by more than 53,800 (14.2%) between the end of 2024 and the end of 2025, per the Economic Policy Institute.

State of play: EPI ties the decline largely to federal workforce reductions rippling beyond government payrolls into contractors and other businesses connected to federal spending. EPI’s own report frames this as a direct result of the current administration’s policies — that’s EPI’s characterization; the underlying job-loss figures come from Bureau of Labor Statistics data.

What this means for you: Job loss, or the threat of it, can hit fast, and D.C.’s numbers are a reminder that a stable-looking national economy doesn’t mean stable for every household. If your income feels uncertain, it’s worth building or rebuilding an emergency cushion before you need it, and keeping a clear record of your bills and due dates so nothing slips through the cracks if things get tight. Copiafy’s bill tracker and goal-setting tools can help you plan around income gaps before they turn into missed payments.

Bottom line: The national economy isn’t flashing recession warnings yet, but in D.C. — especially for Black workers — the slowdown already looks real.
